Purpose: This study was intended to compare the difference of accommodative function and eye movements response in wearing aspheric center-near multifocal soft contact lenses in the 20¡¯s having sufficient accommodation.
Methods: 30 subjects (21.39¡¾2.05 years) were evaluated for accommodative function and eye movements response after wearing aspheric center-near multifocal soft contact lenses and single vision soft contact lenses for six hours a day for 2 weeks respectively, and visual acuity, feeling of fatigue, a cause of discomfort and preference were investigated by using a questionnaire.
Results: Stray light (p = 0.005**), accommodative response (p<0.001***), monocular accommodative facility (p = 0.024*), binocular accommodative facility (p = 0.012*) were higher measured at each test in wearing multifocal soft contact lenses, near point of accommodation was shorter in wearing multifocal soft contact lenses (p = 0.002**). Near fusional vergence was increased in wearing multifocal soft contact lenses, but the results were not statistically significant. According to a survey, in relation to satisfaction of near visual acuity, wearing multifocal soft contact lenses was better. However, in general, wearing single vision soft contact lenses was preferred in near, distance.
Conclusions: Even though wearing multifocal soft contact lenses for 6 hours a day for 2 weeks, it is estimated that incomplete inhibition of the image through the distance zone may be still exist, so stray light and accommodative response values were higher measured. Therefore, the study suggests that it takes more than 2 weeks for the 20s having sufficient accommodation to adjust to the aspheric center-near multifocal soft contact lenses.
